Paul getting a haircut in Tijuana

The Best Barber Shops in Tijuana, Baja California

I hate getting my hair cut in San Diego. All of the commercial chains are soul-sucking. Going to a barber shop in Tijuana is a much more enjoyable experience.

At least once a month, I drive down to TJ to run errands, which always include a haircut. Back in Guadalajara, I really fell in love with the masculine barbershop. Getting a shave with a straight razor and a clean haircut is a real treat. Barbershops are community spaces, and I have found that barbers often times like to talk about tacos.

The reason I am writing this article is because of a bad haircut at one of the ‘Clips’ chains in
San Diego. The stylist who cut my hair was sitting on the ground in front of the salon as I walked in. I confused them for a transient as they stood up, pushed back the hoodie, and followed me into the salon. She was pleasant enough, but finished the entire haircut in under five minutes. The cut wasn’t horrible, but she missed a spot and just didn’t spend enough time on the details. Between the cost of the cut and the tip, I just wasn’t feeling it. I would much rather spend one day a month crossing the border to Mexico for a haircut that I love at a price I am happy to pay and tip well.

The Barbershop Tijuana

The Barber Shop Tijuana in La Cacho

Excellent barbershop that I have had the pleasure of visiting two different locations in La Cacho and Las Palmas. At both locations, I left with an excellent haircut that I felt good about.

La Cacho is such a great neighborhood, I am always hanging out to eat. I never make a reservation, and I have never had to wait more than a few minutes. The strip mall where the La Cacho location is located has an Electric Coffee shop next door. Unfortunately, the La Contra Wine store recently closed. They were downstairs, and I loved talking to them about Valle de Guadalupe.

The Barbershop Tijuana is one of the more moderately priced barber shops in TJ. It is not cheap, but they put a lot of care into the details. They also sell nice hair products that are cheaper than the American Crew stuff that I usually use.

If you happen to be in the neighborhood, think about getting your hair cut while you are there.

Andy’s Barber Shop

Andy's Barber shop in Libertad, Tijuana

This place was awesome. I was walking around Colonia Libertad looking for a birria restaurant, but there was a weekly tianguis street market that made parking a challenge. I am so happy I had to walk that day because I found this barber shop and one of the best coffee shops in Tijuana on Av. Serdan. There is a ton of great food in the Libertad neighborhood, but now I go back just to get my haircut at Andy’s.

Wood Mustache Barbería

Wood Mustache barber shop in Tijuana

I thought the location of Wood Mustache was kind of random until I realized how convenient it is. They are located on the ground floor of a Fairfield by Marriott hotel on Boulevard Sanchez Taboada. It is a very busy street but there is always parking right in front. I am often in this part of Tijuana, and the location is super convenient.

On this particular day, I had driven down to Ensenada to surf. I was still salty from my surf when I got my haircut. My barber was a perfectionist who wasn’t phased by a little salt in my hair. He finished the cut and gave me a wash afterwards.

As of writing, it has been a few weeks since this haircut but I am still just as content with the cut as I was walking out of the salon. If I wasn’t set on trying a new barbershop every month, I would be planning a trip back to this excellent barbershop.

Put these guys on your list.

Final Thoughts on Barbers in Tijuana

As always, these articles are works in progress. I will continue to update the list as I visit more barber shops in Tijuana and maybe even think about Rosarito.
