Looking for the Best English Tutor in Guadalajara? Meet Paul

Are you looking for an English tutor in Guadalajara who actually gets you speaking? I’m Paul, the guy behind Playas y Plazas, and when I’m not hunting for the best tacos in Guadalajara, I’m teaching English to tapatíos and teaching Spanish to estadounidenses.

I run my classes through my language school, San Diego English Tutor. Classes are live and online, so you can learn from your office in Providencia, your house in Zapopan, or a café in Chapultepec without sitting in Guadalajara traffic.

Who Is Paul? A Native English Speaker Who Lives in Guadalajara

I grew up on the US–Mexico border in San Diego, California, and I’ve called Guadalajara home since 2009, when I moved here for graduate school at the Tec de Monterrey. I’ve spent more than twenty years learning Spanish myself, so I know what it feels like to sit in a class understanding everything and still freeze when it’s time to talk.

Here’s my background in a nutshell:

  • Native English speaker from San Diego, California
  • TESOL certificate (150 hours) from Arizona State University
  • Bachelor’s degree from UC Santa Cruz, with study abroad in Costa Rica, Chile, and Mexico
  • Classroom experience at the Sweetwater Union High School District, where I taught math, science, and history in both English and Spanish
  • Real-world English from careers in technology, energy, and hospitality, including more than ten years in restaurants

That last point matters more than you’d think. I’ve used English in meetings, kitchens, job interviews and sales calls. My students learn the English people actually use at work, not just what’s in the textbook.

How I Teach English: The Communicative Method Plus Memory Science

Most people in Guadalajara studied English for years in school and still don’t feel confident speaking. That’s not your fault. It’s usually the method. My classes use the communicative approach, which means you spend class time talking, listening and solving real problems in English, not filling in worksheets.

Every class builds on four pillars:

  1. Pronunciation. We work on the sounds Spanish speakers find hardest, like the short “i” in ship versus the long “ee” in sheep, so people understand you the first time.
  2. Vocabulary. You learn the words you need for your life and job, and review them with spaced-repetition flashcards in Anki, so they stick.
  3. Grammar. We cover grammar in context, when you need it, instead of memorizing charts of rules.
  4. Comprehensible input. You listen to and read English that’s just above your level, the way kids pick up a language, so understanding comes naturally.

My programs follow a hybrid model: two live 55-minute classes a week, plus short activities you can do on your own every day. Ten minutes of practice on your phone between classes does more than one long cram session on Sunday night.

Who My English Classes Are For

Guadalajara is booming with tech companies, international hospitality and remote work, and English opens doors in all of them. My students are usually:

  • Professionals who need English for meetings, emails, presentations or a promotion
  • Job seekers preparing for an interview in English, including technical interviews in tech
  • University students getting ready for exams, exchange programs or study abroad
  • Hospitality and restaurant workers who serve international guests
  • Complete beginners who want to start from zero with a teacher who speaks Spanish

Here’s what a few of my students say (translated from Spanish):

“I always enjoy my classes with Paul. We talk about culture, music and travel. I’ve learned a lot.” — Elena Fines, Zitácuaro, Michoacán
